Another spectacular day on the water. Calm seas and great visibility gave us picture perfect conditions. We spotted a few distant whales early on and as we cruised to check them out we were surprised by young whale surfacing right beside our boat. He wasn’t too interested in us so we continued to 8m offshore where we found a mother, her week old calf and an escort. At first they were happy to just cruise around us but, just as we decided to move on, they changed direction and came right up to our boat. We had an awesome close encounter with the three whales swimming underneath our stern and circling beside us for 20 minutes.
This afternoon we were treated to an awesome display from a mother, her baby girl and their male escort. The trio mugged our boat for an hour and a half, with the mother keeping close to us even as we drifted away. We could hear the male singing under the hull of the boat. He was so loud that we decided to drop the hydrophone in the water and enjoy his clear song. The baby was practicing her tail slaps and pec slaps beside the boat and was happy to swim right up to within a metre of us, her beautiful big eye staring straight at us. The mother was so comfortable with us being around her baby that she took a nap right beside us and we took the opportunity to leave.
