The whales are here and ready to play!!! We had an amazing cruise today with our first whale encounter only 20mins after leaving the dock, just 1.4NM from shore. A sub adult was lazing near the surface and basking in the sun. We saw another three pods of whales and then two of the pods joined together and put on a spectacular display. A group of three competing males were attempting to court a single female and there were lots of pec slaps, fluke ups, tail slaps and boisterous behaviour. They were all vying for her attention so she used our boat as a buffer between herself and the boys.
The affiliated pod played around our boat for an hour and a half, giving us close encounters and nonstop surface time, mugging the boat and investigating our passengers. A large black whale delighted in people watching and spy hopped to get a better view of us. What a great day on the water.
