This morning the crew found a mother and calf very close in only 1 nautical mile off Point Cartwright, then quickly came across another mother and calf only 400 meters off the beach who gave our guests on the boat as well as the beach-goers a great show by practicing his fluke up dives, breaches, pec-fin slaps and spy hops. Over the past 2 days it has been our pleasure to have nearly 200 students from St Columban’s College who enjoyed close up encounters with these beautiful mammals and found the cruise very educational.
This afternoon we spotted a mother and her calf with a male companion. We spent a lot of time watching them play in the warm coastal waters. We then went to investigate a large whale practicing his breaching, spy hops and tail slaps but as we got closer he became shy and was content watching us from under the water.
