Steve's Whale One - Photo of the Day
09 August 2007Well we found a great deal of whales out there in the whale highway and again had our pick of whales to play with.
There were about 12 whales out with us at one stage but most of them pretty interested in each other and coming in close to us in just fleeting visits (whale fly by's) as they'd be cruising beside us, come in close and disappear under the boat only to pop up the other side and totally change direction.
We had whales with us for the entire day just milling around the vessel with many fluke up dives to show us their gorgeous tail flukes - and quite a few in sync dives and double fluke up dives all around us during lunch (great backdrop!)
On the way back in to port we encountered a mother and calf just 4 nautical miles off Point Cartwright. Assuming they would just swim right past us we slowed the vessel to a stop just to observe them from a distance but instead they came right into the stern of the boat and within 15 metres of the boat the young calf started spy hopping to look at us and then breached a couple of times right next to us... amazing!!!
Karlos (our amazing photographer) captured this on camera for you guys and it was an incredible finale for all on board.
With the weather set to continue its lake like conditions and so many pods of whales to choose from the rest of the week will probably bring more great whale days.
