Steve's Whale One - Photo of the Day

04 August 2007

Whale One - Photo of the Day (04 August 2007) It was an eerie day today as the wind picked up and the clouds came over... but the whales certainly put on a show and made us feel welcome!

We had to venture a little further south than normal today and ended up not far from Moreton Island where we found a couple of pods of whales nearby and a pod of 3 whales - Mum, last year's calf and an escort (mum's new boyfriend) that we chose to stick with. We stayed with these whales for a while and out of the blue they began to perform - breaching, head lunging and generally playing around next to the boat. There were a number of breaches in all directions and ended with quite a bit of head lunging from the male.

We had to leave a still performing pod of whales - it was an incredible performance with our biggest crowd on board so far this season and everyone had a fantastic day before we began to head back in towards Point Cartwright.

On our way back though, we came across a mother and calf, a brand new little baby, possibly less than a week old. And just when we thought our day was complete, a pod of dolphins greeted us as we came back into Mooloolaba - a perfect end to an absolutely brilliant day!
