Steve's Whale One - Photo of the Day
25 July 2007Well it’s been a while between whales for Steve’s Whale One… We had an extra couple of days off this week as the sea conditions were pretty messy earlier in the week but we had a great day out today playing with a number of different pods.
Our first encounter was with a young whale (a yearling) only 4 nautical miles off Point Cartwright. This little guy came in very close to the boat, about 30 metres off the port side, took a deep dive and disappeared under the boat coming up on the depth sounder showing that it was indeed right under the vessel and then popped up again very close on the starboard side.
We then headed further east with a tip off from the local fishermen that there were many whales about 15 nautical miles offshore and headed north. We picked up quite a few different pods out there but all were a little elusive showing some quite long down times where they’d be just ahead of the boat then take a deep breath and disappear for a while popping up in the most unexpected places around the boat. That was until the last pod of 2 large adults that had a little bit of a play (a little splashing and rowdy behaviour) beside the boat coming in very close to the bow so all on board could have a good look at them (picture attached).
Although not as acrobatic as they have been in the first few weeks of the season there are still a lot of whales out here off the coast and we’re still having a lot of fun taking out new visitors everyday to meet them.
Talk to you all tomorrow
